BEAUTY TIPS
Don't you love it when you feel as if your hair looks so good, you might've just stepped out of a shampoo commercial? You imagine yourself stopping traffic as you strut your stuff down the street - wind whipping through your long, glistening tresses. Bad hair days? Never!
Okay, so maybe that scenario is only the stuff of dreams - but shiny, healthy hair can be reality. Learn how to shine with these 10 simple tips from one of Daily Glow's resident hair experts, Tippi Shorter. The best part? None of them require a trip to the salon!
1. Say yes to hair serum.
Shine serums are available that have been specially formulated to give frizzy or unruly hair a sleek sheen. Find some great options at your local drugstore, beauty supply store, or hair salon. These products moisturize your hair with a light concentration of oils or silicone, says Shorter. To apply, "use a pea-sized amount to start," she advises. "Start at the bottom of your hair and work your way up, rubbing it into wet hair with your hands." It's important not to use too much serum, because it can weigh hair down, but if you feel you need more moisture, go ahead and add a bit more.
2. Use a leave-in conditioner.
Regular conditioners are great, but if you really want to pump up the shine, Shorter recommends adding a leave-in conditioner to your routine. These come in both spray-on and lotion forms. Apply them the same way you do shine serum (see tip No. 1).
3. Wash with cool water.
Beware of hot water! It can dry out your hair and leave it dull. Instead, after shampooing and conditioning, rinse with cool water. "It closes the cuticle," explains Shorter. "And that allows light to reflect off the hair, producing lots of shine."
4. Be smart about blow-drying.
As you're blow-drying your hair, direct the dryer's nozzle down the hair shafts as you hold each section of hair with a round brush. Finish by pressing the "cool" button on your hair dryer - the cool air produces a reflective effect similar to that of a cool-water rinse after shampooing.
5. Spray on the shine.
When your hair is dry, finish your look with a spray-on shine product. Shorter recommends spray mists made by Ojon and Pantene. Whether it comes in a pump bottle or aerosol can, a shine spray can be misted onto dry hair - no matter what texture it is - to give it an extra glistening effect.
6. Switch to a silicone flatiron.
A flatiron can help straighten hair, which usually looks shinier than wavy hair. But avoid overusing a flatiron - all that heat-styling can be drying! Shorter recommends a new type of flatiron made by Bio Ionic, with silicone built into the plates rather than the typical ceramic or metal. "The heated silicone glides right over the hair and straightens it in one pass," says Shorter. "I've found that silicone cuts the straightening time in half, which means less damage."
7. Get a glossing treatment.
If you really want to get your shine on, consider having a professional glossing treatment. These are often performed after a hair-coloring treatment, but you can get one without the dye job. "It's designed to give you richer hair color with more depth, but it doesn't actually have any pigment to it," says Shorter. A glossing is usually temporary, lasting about four to six shampoos, and glossing kits are available at some drugstores, so you can even try it out without hitting the salon.
8. Hydrate your body.
Drinking plenty of water will ensure that your hair is properly moisturized from the inside out. About eight glasses a day is ideal. Keep a bottle by your side and sip from it often!
9. Eat nutritious foods.
Shorter recommends getting your daily recommended allowances of vitamins A and E for shiny, healthy hair. Also, be sure you're eating plenty of protein, which promotes hair growth. "Eggs and nuts are excellent sources of protein," Shorter says.
10. Avoid harsh chemicals.
Shiny hair is healthy hair - so don't abuse it! Limit your hair's exposure to harsh chemicals, like the chlorine in pools. Use heat-styling as infrequently as you can get away with, and avoid products that contain alcohol, which can dry out your hair and strip its shine.

KEEP YOUR HAIR SHINY & HEALTY
There is nothing quite like a splash of color to completely change the way you look. Adding color to your hair can deliver a daring new style, but it can also deliver a pretty hefty hit to your wallet. In order to get the biggest bang for your buck, you should use the following seven tips that will help you maintain that brilliant color for a longer period of time:
1. Shampoo and Condition: It's perfectly natural to want to have clean hair, but as a rule of thumb, most dying products call for you NOT to shampoo for a period of time before you dye. This allows the color to better adhere to the built up oils in your hair. One thing you can do a few days before you dye is submit your hair to a deep conditioning, as this will add a ton of moisture that the dye loves.
2. Choose a Suitable Color: Going the complete opposite of your natural hair color is incredibly daring, but it also means that you will need to re-dye as soon as your original roots start showing. Going with a color that is in the ballpark of your natural color will make the finished look hold that much longer.
3. Be Aware of the Weather: A lot of people go for a big color change ahead of a new season or an upcoming vacation. The sun in particular can dry out your hair and fade the color that you have added, so stay out of it as much as humanly possible.
4. Select the Right Products: If you do need to be in the sun, you can choose products that have sunscreen built right in. You should be playing close attention to the products you use after coloring anyways, always opting for those that are designed for colored hair.
5. Water Temperature: Hot water is not the best for any type of hair, but it can be particularly damaging to hair that has been given the color treatment. Cooler water is definitely the way to go when it comes time to shampoo and condition your hair, and we can almost guarantee that you will feel as good as your hair looks after getting the cold treatment.
6. Go With the Glaze: Choosing a glaze that makes the color of your hair pop is as simple as selecting one that is suitable for the base color. You can apply the glaze when you shower, and be delighted at the way it really brings out the new color of your hair. Alternatively, you can ask your stylist to apply the glaze if the color is professionally done.
7. Color For The Short Term: Going with a bold new color can be a little bit nerve-wracking, which is why opting for a temporary glaze or dye that can be rinsed out is often the smartest way to go. You can always go with a more permanent look if the color you choose turns out to be the perfect choice.

STYLE YOUR HAIR DAILY
Have you ever wondered why your bobby pins always seem to drop to the floor, or why your ponytail droops by lunchtime? I asked top hairstylists for their best-kept secrets. And what I discovered might surprise you.
You're using your bobby pins wrong. See how one side of the pin is bumpy? That side should always, always, always touch your scalp. "It keeps the pin from sliding out," says New York City hairstylist Nathaniel Hawkins. "When I teach hairdressers that, it's the biggest aha moment. Like they've been driving on the wrong side of the road."
Half up doesn't literally mean half up. When you pull that much hair up, you leave a skimpy-looking portion down below. The more flattering ratio is 30/70, says Hawkins. To get it, draw a line from ear to ear over the top of your head, like a headband. That front section is your 30 percent.
You don't have the right elastic. If your ponytail droops, try using a bungee instead. That kind of elastic, with a hook on each end, wraps around the base of your ponytail until it's totally secure.
Rough-drying isn't that rough. In fact, there are two kinds of rough-drying depending on the results you want. For a big, bouncy blowout, finger-comb your hair upward and follow with the dryer pointed at a 45-degree angle. If you want a sleek, sexy blowout, apply the same technique but in a downward motion. But never just blow-dry your hair haphazardly. You'll spend the rest of your time correcting the damage, says New York City hairstylist Matt Fugate.
Dry shampoo is the best styling tool in your arsenal. It mops up oil, yes. But it also helps bobby pins grip onto hair, gives you insane lift when used in a messy chignon, and can even make your ponytails and braids look bulkier. If you buy one product (other than, um, shampoo) make it this one.
